How to Play Piano Chords

If you’ve ever wanted to learn how to play the piano one of the first things you will need to know is how to play piano chords.  Chords are groups of 3 notes that are played together at the same time with the left hand while playing the melody with the right hand.

The good news is that learning how to play chords doesn’t need to be all that difficult since your hands always make the same pattern when playing the chords – you can usually just memorize the shape your hand makes to get the chord sound you are looking for.  The bad news is that the shape thing is no substitute for practice and lots of it if you want them to sound natural, and flow easily as you play.

Naturally, the biggest part of how to play piano chords is learning where each chord is played on the keyboard.  The easiest part of that though is that the chord is named for the first note of the chord – which is where you play each chord.

So in essence you only really need to know what shape your hand needs to be in, and where to put it on the keyboard.  That’s the quick and easy method of how to play piano chords, but as you might have guessed – there is a little more to it that requires some training, and of course – LOTS OF PRACTICE!

Now, I could give you a list of the names of the chords, and even tell you which keys are included in each – but it’s a lot easier when you can see for yourself which keys need to be pressed –so you will know how to play piano chords well.  So, the best way to learn how to play piano chords is through the one-on-one training that only a private tutor can provide.

Interestingly enough, though – most piano teachers go the classical training route when teaching how to play the piano and of course how to play piano chords.  So you won’t actually get to play anything for a good long while.  Instead you will learn things like chopsticks, and go through a bunch of painful training exercises designed for your benefit but are not much fun, and you don’t really get to play anything you really want to play for a long time.
